Moroccan Amazigh Groups Condemn Racist Chants at Football Match

During the match against Hassania Agadir in Morocco held at the Mohammed V sports complex on April 23, in the national championship, supporters of Raja Casablanca uttered slogans deemed anti-Amazigh by eighteen associations.
These Amazigh associations published a statement denouncing repeated slogans that threaten the safety of players. An organized and recurring phenomenon that they consider an attack on Moroccan values, social fabric, and national unity. They warn of the risk of escalation if authorities continue to tolerate such behaviors despite complaints already filed. "The inaction of competent authorities will only fuel tensions and violence in stadiums," these associations warn.
They note that the discriminatory and hateful slogans chanted during the Raja-Hassania match had already been reported during a similar encounter in October 2022. The statement recalls that several Amazigh associations had then appealed to the public prosecutor and the president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), particularly targeting the president of Raja and supporter groups.
Similar incidents have occurred during other matches. Olympique Dcheira had also denounced racist slogans during its away game in Kenitra for the 21st day of the 2024-2025 championship. Amal Tiznit was targeted by similar acts in November 2024, in the amateur championship.
For the Amazigh associations, these behaviors violate Article 1 of Law 73.15 relating to incitement to crimes and offenses, as well as several international texts, notably the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, but also the Moroccan Constitution of 2011.
