Montpellier: 11,000 € in cash seized, suspects claim to be financing a trip to Morocco

Four young men were apprehended on Monday, January 19, 2026 in the Paillade neighborhood of Montpellier, after the discovery of more than 11,000 euros in cash in their vehicle. An investigation for money laundering has been opened to determine the origin of these funds, which the suspects claim to have gathered to finance a trip to Morocco.

The check was carried out around 4 p.m. by riot police on reinforcement duty, following a traffic violation committed by the driver of a powerful rental sedan registered in Germany. The vehicle contained four individuals aged 20 and 21, all residing in the area. The sight of a bundle of banknotes in the passenger compartment led the police to arrest the occupants and conduct a full search of the car, reports Le Midi Libre.

The searches revealed between 1,000 and 2,000 euros on each passenger, while more than 11,000 euros were hidden in two different places in the trunk. To justify the origin of this sum, the accused gave various explanations to the investigators, mentioning personal savings or withdrawals from their bank accounts. They claimed that this money was intended for a one-week vacation in Morocco.

These statements are currently the subject of investigations by the national police, as the initial checks have not confirmed the veracity of their statements. The four men have been summoned to appear before the courts on June 2. Pending the trial, the entire seized amount has been placed with the Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations.
