Mohammed VI’s state visit to France postponed again: January 2027 now under consideration

This is the new preferred window for Rabat and Paris, Africa Intelligence reported on Tuesday, September 8. The specialist publication nevertheless notes that this date could in turn change because of the proximity of the French presidential election, scheduled for spring 2027.

The sovereign’s trip had until now been expected in the autumn. Last April, Mohammed VI’s state visit to France was being considered after the Moroccan legislative elections and the start of the parliamentary session. In June, discussions between the two capitals were still pointing to October.

A first shift toward the beginning of 2027 had nevertheless been mentioned in July. According to Le Monde, preparing the treaty intended to structure the new relationship between Morocco and France required more time than expected. The information published on Tuesday goes further by now making January 2027 the preferred period for the king’s visit.

A treaty at the heart of the royal visit

This visit is expected to be one of the highlights of the rapprochement between Rabat and Paris, initiated after several years of diplomatic tensions. Mohammed VI accepted Emmanuel Macron’s invitation during the French president’s state visit to Morocco in October 2024.

The main issue surrounding the trip remains the conclusion of a bilateral treaty presented as unprecedented between Morocco and France. The text is intended to establish a new framework for long-term cooperation in several areas, including the economy, diplomacy, education, culture and strategic issues.

Mohammed VI’s visit to Paris has already undergone several schedule changes. It was initially considered for 2025, before being postponed to 2026. Autumn 2026 was then presented as the most likely period.

January 2027 is therefore now the preferred scenario, although no official date has yet been announced by the Royal Palace or the Élysée. The French presidential election, scheduled a few months later, could still affect the timetable.
