Mixed Fortunes for Morocco’s Soccer Stars in European Leagues

While some Atlas Lions like Achraf Hakimi and Zakaria Aboukhlal are thriving with their clubs in Europe and Egypt, others are going through a bad patch.
Achraf Hakimi is delighting with PSG. He was one of the big players of the weekend in Europe. He contributed to his club’s victory over Lyon (3-2) in the 23rd round of the French Ligue 1 by scoring a brace (53rd and 85th minutes). With this performance, Hakimi brings his league goal tally this season to four. He has 15 offensive contributions (goals and assists) in 31 games in all competitions this season. His Moroccan compatriot, Toulouse striker Zakaria Aboukhlal, also shone with his club. He contributed to the crushing victory against Le Havre (4-1). He opened the scoring with a superb acrobatic overhead kick. He brings his Ligue 1 goal tally to seven this season.

In Germany, Amine Adli (Bayer Leverkusen) made a remarkable return to the Bundesliga. Recovered from his knee injury that kept him off the pitch for four months, he contributed to his team’s victory over Holstein Kiel (2-0) in the 23rd round, delivering an assist to his Czech teammate Patrik Schick as early as the 9th minute, before scoring the second goal himself in the 45th minute. In Spain, it is his compatriot Maroan Sannadi, who arrived from Deportivo Alavés, who scored his first goal with Athletic Bilbao in a resounding victory against Real Valladolid (7-1) in the Spanish Liga. He signed a contract until June 30, 2029, with an option to extend for one year.
In Egypt, it was Achraf Bencharki and Mahmoud Bentayg who both shone with their clubs during the confrontation between Al Ahly and Zamalek (1-1) by scoring goals. However, not all the Atlas Lions are in good shape. Some have suffered injuries. This is the case of Noussair Mazraoui. Injured in the right knee during the 26th round of the Premier League, opposing Manchester United to Everton, he was substituted in the 70th minute, feeling intense pain. His participation in United’s next match against Ipswich, scheduled for Wednesday, is uncertain. The news is not good either for Nayef Aguerd (Real Sociedad). He had to leave the field as early as the 32nd minute in the match against Leganés, suffering from thigh pain.
