Melilla Residents Face Hours-Long Border Delays as Morocco Tightens Crossing

Spanish journalist Ignacio Cembrero reported differential treatment at the border between Spain and Morocco. Those living in Melilla would have experienced, he said, very long delays (up to 10 hours) while Moroccans living abroad leaving Morocco were able to make the crossing in only 90 minutes.
In an article, the journalist relayed the discontent of Spanish travelers during the Marhaba operation. He explained that the Government Delegation in Melilla, despite the sudden closure of the customs by Rabat, acknowledged that "it is on the Moroccan side that the lack of fluidity is occurring."
Melilla residents had only one lane to cross, in addition to restrictions on luggage, and expressed their anger during a demonstration in Beni-Enzar, calling for "an end to the abuses" and demanding the resignation of Sabrina Moh, the government delegate.
In response, the Delegation announced this Friday an agreement between Spain and Morocco to open a second lane at the border for the inhabitants of Melilla. Furthermore, the government delegate urged travelers to organize demonstrations on the Moroccan side of the border to directly express their demands to the Moroccan government.
