Melilla Residents Can Now Cancel Moroccan Vehicle Registrations at Spanish Consulates

Melilla residents who wish to cancel the green card of their vehicles registered in Morocco will now be able to do so at the Moroccan consulates in Almeria and Algeciras.

The Islamic Commission of Melilla (CIM) has managed to solve this problem faced by thousands of residents of the city who own vehicles with the Moroccan green card. Since the closure of the borders with Morocco in March 2020, it has been impossible to renew or cancel this document necessary to enter Morocco, recalls Melilla Hoy.

From now on, the procedure for canceling the green card can be carried out in the Moroccan consulates in Almería and Algeciras. Thanks to the steps taken by the CIM with the Moroccan authorities, vehicle owners will only have to go personally to one or the other of these two consulates, with their identity document, driver’s license, technical inspection and green card.

After verifying the documents provided as well as the vehicle’s chassis number, the consulate will issue a document certifying that the green card has been removed from the system. This official document will allow the vehicle owner to sell it without any problem and to go to Morocco with another vehicle.

Before, the many residents of Melilla who wanted to sell their vehicles with a Moroccan green card were forced to sign an affidavit with the buyer in which they undertook to go to the border as soon as it reopened to cancel the green card.
