Zohran Mamdani chose the atmosphere of "Little Morocco" to follow the kickoff of the 2025 CAN. On Sunday, the new mayor of New York was spotted in a restaurant in Queens, vibrating to the rhythm of the victory of the Atlas Lions over the Comoros (2-0).

A big football fan, the Democratic elected official did not want to miss the launch of the great African event. As part of an outing in the borough of Queens, he settled in at "Dar Lbahja", a popular Moroccan establishment, to watch the opening match.

The mayor’s presence delighted the restaurant staff and customers. In a video posted on social media, the establishment shared its enthusiasm: "What a great moment at Dar Lbahja today! We had the honor of welcoming Zohran Mamdani during the Morocco match."

Far from the protocol, Mamdani blended into the crowd. "He was really one of the nicest, happiest and most humble people. He watched the game with everyone, smiling, laughing and sharing a genuine joy, like a family. No ego, just good humor and respect," the restaurant testifies.

While his presence in a Moroccan stronghold is a friendly wink, it is not entirely due to chance. Zohran Mamdani is a football enthusiast, particularly of the Arsenal club. He had recently confessed his admiration for certain former Gunners players, including the former Moroccan international Marouane Chamakh.

"Every day when I wake up, I think of Sébastien Squillaci, Pascal Cygan... Marouane Chamakh," he had revealed humorously at the end of November.

It remains to be seen which team he will support for the rest of the tournament. If he seems to have a weakness for the Atlas Lions, his heart could sway towards Group C. Born in Uganda, the mayor will probably keep a close eye on the match between the "Cranes" and Tunisia, scheduled for this Tuesday evening.
