Massive Traffic Jam Snarls Moroccan Coast as Summer Tourists Flood Popular Destinations

Massive traffic jam this Sunday on the Tetouan-Tangier national road. Endless lines of vehicles were recorded on this section which is particularly congested during the summer due to the movements of families to spend their holidays in one city or the other.
Traffic from Tetouan to Tangier was blocked this Sunday, particularly at the entrances to the rural municipalities along the road and at the checkpoints of the Royal Gendarmerie and the National Security. During the summer, this road, as well as those leading to M’diq, Martil, Fnideq and their surroundings, experience almost daily traffic jams due to the influx of tourists and Moroccans residing abroad (MREs) to these cities to spend their holidays there.
To smooth traffic between Tetouan and Tangier and relieve the population, a project to build a highway connecting the two cities, as well as the widening of the current road to six lanes, are planned. The widening work should start in September. The objective is to streamline traffic, strengthen the connection between the two cities and thus contribute to the economic and tourist development of the region.
