Massive Traffic Jams Plague Northern Morocco as Summer Vacationers Flood Roads

Vacation departures have turned into a real ordeal with endless traffic jams on several road axes connecting the cities of the Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma region, as well as within urban areas, caused by the massive influx of Moroccan visitors and Moroccans residing abroad (MREs).

Monstrous traffic jams are observed over several kilometers, for hours, on several sections of the N16 national road connecting Tétouan to Al Hoceïma, as well as on the national road connecting Tétouan to M’diq, notes the website Al3omk, specifying that most of the traffic jams are concentrated in the province of Tétouan, between the communes of Amsa and Azla, between Azla and Tétouan, as well as between M’diq and Tétouan at the level of the commune of Mellalyene. Similar phenomenon on the road connecting Tétouan to Tanger, particularly at the level of the commune of Ain Lahcen in the province of Tétouan. The road between Targha and Kaa Asras, as well as the entrances to Jebha, in the province of Chefchaouen, also experience traffic jams.

Most of the traffic jams recorded between 5 p.m. and midnight, especially on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, are mainly concentrated at the Royal Gendarmerie checkpoints and will continue throughout the month of August. This phenomenon is repeated daily on the road connecting Oued Laou, from the commune of Amsa to the commune of Azla, sometimes reaching Tétouan, with traffic jams sometimes exceeding 15 kilometers. Thus, traffic is exceptionally dense with lines of cars. Some cars try to overtake on the right, endangering human lives.

Faced with this situation, voices are rising to call for the implementation of new road projects and the widening of existing road axes.
