Massive Fish Die-Off in Morocco’s Moulouya River Sparks Environmental Investigation

An investigation was launched following the alert on the tragic fate of thousands of dead fish on the banks of the Moulouya River. While the water analysis of the Oued is still ongoing, experts have presented a worrying report.
The research led by Doctors Mohamed Benata and Yahya Basraoui, two environmental protection activists, aims to identify the causes of this environmental disaster, reports Hespress.
In this regard, the experts visited the site and collected the testimony of the residents. These visits were carried out on five sites, namely: the Moulay Ali pumping station in Chouihya, the Douar Oulad Kaddour, the Hassan II Bridge, the Douar Oulad Moussa on the left bank and the mouth of the Moulouya on the right bank. The tragedy was also observed along the beach between the city of Saidia and Ras El-Maa, according to the inhabitants.
Water samples were collected by the two experts to be analyzed. Pending the test results, the report attributes the cause of the fish mortality to the confluence of Oued Zebra into Oued Moulouya.
