Massive Delays at Morocco-Spain Border as Vacationers Return Home

The return phase of the Strait Crossing Operation (OPE in its Spanish acronym) is causing huge delays at the border between Morocco and Spain. On Saturday, August 31, thousands of cars remained stuck in long queues. Motorists had to wait up to four hours before heading to Ceuta.
According to information provided by the port authorities, 2,356 vehicles embarked the day before towards the peninsula via Ceuta, a figure slightly higher than the average recorded between Monday and Thursday. However, the OPE management had indicated Friday and Monday as days of high traffic, notes Ceuta actualidad.
For its part, the Port of Tanger-Med has already activated the interchangeability of tickets between the transport companies, a measure adopted to expedite the vehicles in order of arrival and thus avoid crowds. Meanwhile, the maritime captaincy of Ceuta has not yet resorted to this measure that Algeciras has already adopted several times during the return phase of the MREs.
In the face of all this, the port authority claims to maintain its level of vigilance in order to adopt an extraordinary measure in case the number of cars arriving at its facilities could disrupt the normal development of embarkation operations.
