Massive Algae Farm in Morocco Aims to Combat Climate Change

The British company specializing in carbon dioxide removal (CDR), Brilliant Planet and Mott MacDonald, the global engineering, development and management consulting firm, are teaming up for the development of an algae production facility in Morocco.
In a press release, Brilliant Planet announced that it is partnering with the Mott MacDonald group to design and build a 30-hectare carbon dioxide removal demonstration facility in Morocco. "We are currently developing the world’s largest (by volume) algae production facility that will be operational in 2024. With our partners, we are creating innovative technical designs that reduce energy demand and environmental footprint throughout the asset lifecycle," said Mert Yesugey, Director of Engineering at Brilliant Planet.
"Negative emission technologies have an important role to play in limiting global warming and addressing the effects of climate change. Brilliant Planet’s approach of using marine microalgae to capture and sequester CO₂ offers a promising and highly scalable pathway. We are delighted to support Brilliant Planet’s vision at a time when we are heavily focused on nature-based solutions to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate climate change," said Mark Dives, Account Manager at Mott MacDonald.
Mott MacDonald will initially provide front-end technical design support, covering multiple disciplines for the demonstration facility in Akhfennir, Morocco. It will also collaborate with Brilliant Planet on site development. As for the construction, it will begin later in 2023.
