Marrakech: An Unfinished Fountain at the Heart of a 700M DH Royal Project Sparks Outrage

At the heart of this file is a fountain, now filled in, which was to become an aesthetic emblem of the city. The overall project, with a budget exceeding 700 million dirhams, planned the complete rehabilitation of the square, including new lighting, paving, and tourist information pavilions. Eleven years later, these pavilions remain closed, the paving is considered of "poor quality," and the square resembles an "interrupted construction site."

According to an associative actor interviewed by Al3omk, the work on the fountain was suddenly stopped after the dismantling of the old structure and the digging of the basin, without any official explanation. The initial project of a "dancing fountain synchronized with light and music" has turned into an abandoned space.

Calls for the Opening of an Investigation

Faced with this situation, associative actors denounce "vague and contradictory" explanations from the authorities. They point out that this square, located in a very busy area near Jemaa El-Fna, should have become a convivial space, but has turned into a "symbol of abandonment." They are now calling for an investigation into the fate of the work and the millions of dirhams allocated.

The "Marrakech, City of Renewal" program, launched in 2014 by King Mohammed VI, aimed to make the city a metropolis reconciling authenticity and modernity. More than ten years later, the delays observed on many construction sites, such as that of the El Qzadria square, are raising growing concerns about the future of these structuring royal projects.
