Marrakech Tourism Surges Past Pre-Pandemic Levels, June Data Shows

Tourist attendance recorded in the Marrakech-Safi region in June 2023 exceeds the pre-Covid-19 crisis level for the same period. This confirms the recovery of tourism activity.
Arrivals in classified hotels in the Marrakech-Safi region stood at 219,482 for the month of June 2023, compared to 212,681 in 2019, an increase of 3%, according to figures from the Tourism Observatory. The cumulative arrivals at the end of June 2023 reached 1,442,543 against 1,307,120 during the same period of 2019, an increase of 10%. What about tourist nights? In total, 707,638 nights were recorded in hotels during the month of June 2023, compared to 658,715 in June 2019 (+7%). The cumulative at the end of June reached 4,388,053 in 2023 against 3,967,857 nights in 2019, an improvement of 11%: a rate of 75% recorded for international tourism and 25% for domestic tourism. The French market (26%), the domestic market (25%) and the English market (16%) form the top 3 dominant markets.
In terms of passengers, some 1,651,949 passengers were welcomed at Marrakech Menara airport at the end of June 2023 against 1,487,308 passengers for the same period of 2019, an increase of 11.29%. As for the number of flights, it reached 9,308 flights during the first six months of 2023 against 18,623 flights during the same period of 2019, representing a recovery rate of 103.68%. The number of passengers stands at 2,916,658 during the first six months against 2,631,947 during the same period of 2019, representing a recovery rate of 110.82%.
These results were obtained thanks to the expansion of the hotel park in the Marrakech-Safi region. In total, 30 tourist accommodation establishments were opened at the end of June 2023 for an investment volume of 135 million dirhams, which strengthened the accommodation capacity by 463 additional beds and created 242 direct jobs. For the record, the number of arrivals at border posts stood at 6.5 million during the first 6 months of 2023 (1.4 million tourists in June), an increase of 21% compared to the same period in 2019.
