Marrakech Snack Bar Owner Sentenced to 4 Years for Deadly Food Poisoning

The court of first instance of Marrakech imposed, on Monday, July 1, 2024, a prison sentence on the owner of the snack bar in the Mhamid district where 26 people had been victims of food poisoning.
The verdict has fallen in the "deadly poison" case, which caused the death of six people, including a child. The court of first instance of Marrakech sentenced the owner of the snack bar in the Mhamid district, where 26 people had been victims of food poisoning, and two of his accomplices to four years in prison. They also received a fine of 1,000 dirhams. They were all three prosecuted in custody. The court had meanwhile rejected their request for release.
The owner of the establishment is accused of causing death by negligence and non-compliance with regulations and laws, removing objects from the crime scene before carrying out the initial operations in order to obstruct the course of justice, as well as providing a product that poses a danger to human health, and storing and storing food intended for sale in unsanitary conditions. The two other people were prosecuted for "complicity".
In late April, 26 people were poisoned after eating at a snack bar in the Mhamid district. They were rushed to the Ibn Zohr hospital. Following the multiplication of complaints, the owner of the snack bar, as well as two of his employees, were arrested and taken to the police station. After their interrogation, the police transmitted all the reports to the public prosecutor’s office at the court of first instance of Marrakech.
