Marrakech Police Arrest Fake Guides and Beggars in Tourist Area Crackdown

A security campaign led by the Marrakech police has led to the arrest of 14 individuals on Jemaa El-Fna Square and its surroundings.
This operation, supervised by the head of the district, aimed to fight against begging and the phenomenon of fake tourist guides that tarnish the image of this emblematic site of the city, reports the local site kech24.
The campaign led to the arrest of six individuals posing as tourist guides and eight people practicing begging. These individuals were taken to the police station for the establishment of reports and their presentation to the competent prosecutor’s office.
Last week, an Arab tourist had shared on social networks a video denouncing the unscrupulous behavior of a Moroccan who had tried to scam him during his stay in Marrakech.
In this video, the tourist recounts his misadventure that occurred during a walk in one of the markets of the famous Jemaa El-Fna square. Approached by an individual who spontaneously offered himself as a tourist guide, he accepts his services. The guide then takes him to a store serving "bissara". The latter demanded 200 dirhams from him, while this soup costs less than one euro in most Moroccan restaurants.
