Marrakech Officials Deny Reports of Fines for ’Indecent’ Clothing

The information that the authorities in Marrakech have imposed a fine on women and girls due to outfits deemed indecent in public spaces is false.
According to several websites and Facebook pages, a fine of 2,000 dirhams would have been imposed on several women and girls for wearing indecent outfits last week. A measure that would aim to reduce incidents of harassment and sexual assault in public places, but also to strengthen the feeling of security in the streets. The adoption of this measure would be motivated by the increase in concerns related to harassment incidents and the preservation of public decency.
The measure is controversial on social media, even though it is just a rumor. While it is true that the security services in Marrakech do sometimes apprehend certain girls for offenses against public decency, as happened on Monday at "M Avenue" in the Hivernage district, no fine has been imposed on girls and women for depravity of morals for the time being.
