Marrakech’s Iconic Jemaâ El Fna Square Struggles to Revive as Tourism Slowly Returns

While tourism is gradually waking up with the reopening of restaurants, hotels and public spaces, the mythical Jemaâ El Fna square has been abandoned. Several structures have initiated cultural activities to save this historic square.
After several months of closure due to the coronavirus, the Jemaâ El Fna square has lost its charm and its artists have found themselves on technical unemployment, reports L’Economiste. Some have even been asked to vacate the premises out of respect for the safety instructions of the authorities.
To materially support the artists of the square, an "supervised" show was organized by the Association of the Grand Atlas and the CDRT in compliance with barrier gestures. It brought together several troupes from the square to animate Jemaâ el Fna.
These structures have also organized, with the support of the wilaya of the Marrakech-Safi region, a donation campaign to support these artists.
