Marrakech’s Iconic Jamaâ El-Fna Square Vendors Protest Prolonged Renovation Delays

Under renovation for two years, Jamaâ El-Fna square is still under construction, causing the anger of the bazarists who can no longer stand to see their shops closed.
The bazarists of Jamaâ El-Fna square are demanding the acceleration of the rehabilitation work. Several shop owners have organized protest movements to demand that the work on this site be completed as soon as possible, reports the daily Al Akhbar, which points out that the regional prefecture has given instructions for a large part of this site to be completed at the beginning of this week.
A decision very well received by the bazarists and shop owners who want to believe in the good faith of the local authorities. They have also asked Karim Kassi, the wali of the region, to provide them with essential information such as the date of reopening of their businesses and the conditions under which it can be done.
The merchants of "Souk Jdid" located near Jemaa El fna square, accuse the city council of being responsible for this delay, which is creating difficulties for many Moroccans. Failing a protest movement, they have sent letters to the Ministry of the Interior and the wali of the region so that the situation can be resolved. As for the professionals of the old medina, they too accuse the City Council of being lenient in monitoring the renovation work.
