Marrakech Golf Industry Urges Border Reopening as Tourism Slumps

Heavily impacted by the health crisis, golf tourism is struggling to take off again in Marrakech. Professionals in this sector are calling for the rapid and complete reopening of borders.
This booming sub-sector before the Covid-19 period is in decline, reports Le360. In 2019, the ochre city had welcomed 145,000 clients in Marrakech, an increase of 6% compared to 2018.
For Jawad Belmaani, director of the Montgomerie golf course in Marrakech, with golf courses in Europe closed during the winter, Europeans choose the Marrakech destination, which has more than a dozen courses that meet the expectations of enthusiasts.
To this asset are also added the tourist potential of the city, including luxury hotels and exceptional restaurants. Moreover, the proximity of the ochre city to certain European cities make it a destination of choice for Moroccans living abroad and foreigners.
According to Jawad Belmaani, this business has also allowed the creation of jobs for the people of Marrakech and Moroccans. According to him, Covid-19 has disrupted all commercial strategies. "We are working hard to succeed in the recovery, which mainly depends on the reopening of air borders," he said.
