Marrakech Environmental Group Warns of Air Quality Crisis Amid World Cup Preparations

The environmental movement "Maroc Environnement 2050" expresses deep concerns about the ongoing urban developments in Marrakech, in the perspective of the 2030 World Cup. The association calls for a complete overhaul of the transport system to prioritize sustainable mobility and improve the quality of life for residents.
In a statement, "Maroc Environnement 2050" warns about the deterioration of air quality in the ochre city. Air pollution has reached an "unbearable" level, according to the association, which fears that the road widening works will further aggravate the situation by promoting automobile traffic.
The movement advocates for massive investment in public transport, currently considered "inefficient" and unable to meet the needs of a metropolis like Marrakech, specifying that efficient and environmentally friendly public transport would reduce traffic jams and improve the quality of life for citizens.
The association also calls for the creation of secure and fully separated bicycle lanes. It denounces the current state of the bicycle lanes, regularly invaded by cars, buses and taxis, making them dangerous for cyclists. It also recommends separating the lanes dedicated to bicycles from those reserved for motorcycles, due to differences in speed and size.
The association insists on the need to adopt a global and sustainable vision of urban mobility, in order to make Marrakech a modern, livable and environmentally friendly city.
