Marrakech’s Craft Exports Surge 31%, Led by Copper and Wood Products

Just over 246 million dirhams worth of craft products were exported by the city of Marrakech last year, compared to 187 million in 2017, an increase of 31.25%.
This strong increase is due to the increase in exports of copper, wood and blanket products, which increased by 149%, 68% and 80% respectively, reports the newspaper Libération, citing the annual report of the activities of the Regional Directorate of Crafts in Marrakech.
The United States remains, once again this year, the main market for Moroccan crafts with a share of 22%, followed by Arab countries (19%), France (13%), according to the directorate, which indicates that the number of small and medium-sized enterprises created in 2018 increased by 49% compared to 2017, mainly in the leather (46%), carpet (13%) and furniture (10%) sectors.
At the regional level, out of the 38 "Morocco Handmade" units, 18 are located in Marrakech, 10 in Essaouira and 4 in Safi.
