Marrakech City Councilor Arrested for Accepting Bribe from French Investor
The lure of gain led a Marrakech city councilor to fall into a trap set by the authorities. A member of the Party of Authenticity and Modernity (PAM), she was arrested for accepting a bribe from a French investor.
The latter, the owner of a riad in the ochre city, had sought the help of the elected official to resolve an administrative problem. As the chairperson of a commission within the District Council of the Medina, she seemed able to facilitate his procedures. But the unscrupulous councilor preferred to exploit the situation to her own advantage, according to the website Rue20.
She is said to have repeatedly demanded money from the investor, promising in exchange to resolve his problem. Tired of waiting and faced with the persistence of the elected official, the Frenchman decided to report her to the police.
A plan was then put in place to catch her in the act. The investor, equipped with recordings proving the extortion, served as bait. On Friday evening, the councilor was apprehended as she received a new sum of money.
Placed in custody, she admitted the facts and implicated another PAM elected official, her colleague within the same district. The investigation, led by the Brigade of Economic and Financial Crimes, continues to shed light on this corruption case.
