Maroc Telecom Reports 9.1% Subscriber Growth Amid Pandemic Challenges

The Maroc Telecom group is doing rather well despite the health crisis. This is evidenced by the latest figures published on the number of subscribers and turnover.
Thus, the number of subscribers reached 68.4 million in the first half of 2020, an increase of 9.1% compared to last year.
Among the reasons behind this increase, we mention the integration of Tigo Chad into the Group’s scope since July 1, 2019. As a result, the Group’s customer base has expanded, reaching 19.6 million customers, a slight increase of 0.1% over a year thanks to the growth of the postpaid base (+7.1%) and despite the decline in prepaid (-0.7%). The same source reports that the group has not escaped the impacts of the health crisis related to the pandemic of the new coronavirus. This justifies the decrease in Mobile turnover (CA) of 2.6%, to 6.8 billion dirhams (MMDH) in particular on international incoming activities, prepaid outgoing and roaming.
The Fixed segment is the other factor that justifies Maroc Telecom’s good performance. Indeed, the group indicates that this service has improved by 6.9% over a year, bringing the number of lines to nearly 2 million, while the broadband customer base has increased by 10.5% to 1.7 million subscribers. It follows that Fixed and Internet activities in Morocco have generated a turnover of more than 4.7 MMDH, up 1.5% compared to the 1st half of 2019, thanks to the growth of Fixed Data.
Internationally, the same source emphasizes that the group’s mobile customer base has exceeded 44.7 million customers spread across several countries. These are Mauritania (2.4 million), Burkina Faso (9 million), Gabon (1.4 million), Mali (8 million), Côte d’Ivoire (9.2 million), Benin (4.3 million), Togo (3.1 million), Niger (3 million), Central African Republic (184,000) and Chad (4.2 million). All these performances have enabled the group to achieve a turnover (CA) of more than 18.3 billion dirhams (MMDH) during the first half of 2020, up 2.7% (stable on a comparable basis).
To achieve all these performances, despite the deleterious context of the health crisis, the group admits to having devoted itself mainly to the development of Mobile Data and Mobile Money services Internationally and to the growth of Fixed Data in Morocco. This explains that as of June 30, 2020, activities in Morocco generated a turnover of 10.5 MMDH, down 1.8%, compared to the same period in 2019.
