Malaga-Tanger Med Freight Route Doubles Traffic, Still Room for Growth

Freight traffic between the port of Malaga and the port of Tanger Med in Morocco has doubled since the launch in mid-March of this maritime link operated daily from Monday to Sunday by Maritima Peregar.
Despite this performance, the line still has a lot of room for growth and is far from the maximum capacity of the ship and the quay, which would be 100 units. Maritima Peregar, for its part, hopes to be able to reach 50 to 60 platforms per rotation in the medium term, reports Sur. "We are gradually consolidating the traffic, but we are still far from the expectations," acknowledged Joaquín Pérez-Muñoz, administrator of Marítima Peregar.
"The reality is that the customers, especially the most important ones, with whom we work, are starting to know the line and to consolidate their movements because they appreciate the service we offer them," adds the manager, citing the Renault plant in Barcelona and Malaga which uses this line for the export of its new vehicles and especially spare parts to the Tangier plant. "The port of Malaga has become a strategic partner of Renault," through XPO Logistics," he points out.
In addition to the automotive industry, textile products and fruits and vegetables are the most important traffics, details Pérez-Muñoz, specifying that the link is now operated 7 days a week, from Monday to Sunday. Last Monday, a delegation from the Port Authority of Malaga, led by its president, Carlos Rubio, went to the port of Tanger Med in Morocco to exchange with its managers in order to improve the coordination of the daily Ro-Ro (roll-on/roll-off) line and ships. The delegation also visited the Renault plant in Tangier.
"Since its launch in March until today, the ship has more than doubled the number of trucks, with growth of more than 100%. Now that we have a 7-day-a-week rotation, and with the agreements we have concluded with Tanger Med, we hope it will continue to grow," said Carlos Rubio, assuring that this line is a boon for Malaga businessmen in terms of importing and exporting their products. Passenger transport with or without vehicles should also be reactivated on this Malaga-Tangier line, certainly after the Marhaba Operation (June 15-September 15).
