A major discovery in Morocco redefines the history of marine life
American and Danish researchers have uncovered rare Jurassic microbial structures in the Dadès Valley, Morocco. Revealed recently, this discovery from deep sediments redefines the conditions for the preservation of ancient marine life.
A joint study by the University of Texas and Aarhus University has just marked a turning point in paleobiology. The Geological Society of America announces that the scientific team has identified folded biological imprints in the strata of the Tinghir province. These formations have been found in a former abyssal marine environment, an area previously considered incompatible with this type of development.

Traditionally, the scientific community exclusively associated these microbial structures with surface waters, where light enables the photosynthesis process. However, the scientists have detected these specific imprints within turbidites, deposits generated by ancient submarine mud slides. This geological configuration demonstrates that these organisms formed more than 180 meters below sea level.
Detailed analyses rule out the hypothesis of an origin linked to luminous algae. The data proves that these architectures result from the activity of chemosynthetic bacteria. These specific organic communities drew their energy directly from the chemical materials transported to the seabed by turbid currents.
The exceptional nature of this find also lies in its state of preservation over the ages. Dating back 180 million years, these microbial mats have survived the Jurassic period, an era marked by intense marine fauna activity that usually destroys such traces. The ancient ecosystem of the Dadès Valley provided unique preservation conditions, definitively confirmed by the detection of significant organic carbon rates under the folds studied in the laboratory.
