Maghreb Nations Launch Plans for Unified Electricity Market by 2025

Studies have been launched in Tunis this Tuesday for the gradual implementation of a Maghreb electricity market, which will come into operation by 2025.
According to the official, this market of 100 million inhabitants and an electricity production capacity of around 45,000 megawatts will make it possible to set a tariff for the transport of electricity from one country to another. He said the committee is currently working to create common power plants.
Moncef Harabi did not fail to emphasize the need to strengthen Maghreb partnership in this sector, noting that the Maghreb countries each have a solar power production plan from renewable energies, particularly Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria, not to mention Mauritania.
According to the president of the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG), the Mauritanian authorities want to implement a plan to produce electricity from wind power, up to 100 megawatts.
As for the CEO of the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE), he stressed the need to carry out an evaluation of the activities, governance and functioning of COMELEC, since its creation nearly half a century ago. "This diagnosis will make it possible to identify and remove the constraints for the realization of important objectives of COMELEC, such as the establishment of a Maghreb electricity market," explained Abderrahim El Hafid.
