Maersk Shifts Container Traffic from Malaga to Morocco’s Tanger-Med Port

The Danish shipping company, Maersk, has temporarily abandoned the port of Malaga to fall back on the Moroccan terminal of Tanger-Med 2.
The largest company in the international container sector, Maersk, is routing all the traffic planned for the capital to the Moroccan terminal of Tanger-Med 2, after the loss of ships.
After intense negotiations, this large-scale crisis, which lasted for years, ended in 2018 with an agreement: the Danish shipping company has committed to carry out at least 150 stops per year for at least two years. In charge of maintaining operations focused on traffic, the total number obtained by the Malaga terminal in 2018 was around 935,332 tons. Last year, it reached 1.4 million tons, reports Via Economia.
The reasons for this abandonment are numerous and varied. These include transit costs that can include all types of fees or fuel prices among many other factors, the option to leave Malaga may be based on the concession that this shipping company has had for 30 years for the use of part of these Moroccan mooring berths; facilities that currently have 1,600 linear meters of mooring and 76 hectares of land for storage.
Faced with the profitability of using the quays of the Moroccan port, the facilities of the Malaga terminal seem to have ceased to interest this giant in the world of containers which currently, according to data from January 2020, operates with 725 ships it manages as owner or on lease.
A similar situation had already occurred in 2013 and the Danish company had ended up returning.
