Macron’s Gaza Remarks Spark Controversy in Moroccan Parliament

Abdallah Bouanou, president of the parliamentary group of the Party of Justice and Development (PJD), criticized the remarks of Emmanuel Macron on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, made on Tuesday before the Moroccan parliament. The French president described the Hamas attack against Israel on October 7, 2023 as "barbaric and savage", which, according to the deputy, appears as an "unjust and erroneous description of the Palestinian resistance".
"We express our rejection of France’s position, as expressed by President Emmanuel Macron in his speech before the Moroccan Parliament, regarding the war of genocide waged by the Israeli occupation army for more than a year in Gaza in Palestine. I affirm that the operation ’Al Aqsa Deluge’ is a natural reaction, guaranteed by all international laws, conventions and legislations, to which all peoples under the grip of occupation and colonization, including the Palestinian people, are entitled...," Bouanou said in a statement to the press.
And he continued: "Our rejection of Mr. Emmanuel Macron’s description of the events of October 7, 2023 is reinforced by the fact that it is a speech delivered before the members of Parliament, who derive their mandate from the nation and represent the Moroccan people, historically in solidarity with Palestine. This people has constantly organized rallies and marches in all cities, since October 7, 2023, to express their support for the Palestinian resistance, considering it a legitimate struggle in the context of the battle for the liberation of the land and the defense of the holy sites".
The parliamentarian also stressed "that Morocco always places the Palestinian cause on the same level as that of the Moroccan Sahara, and that Morocco’s action to consolidate its sovereignty over this region will never be done, neither today nor in the future, to the detriment of the struggle of the Palestinian people for their legitimate rights". He also recalled that "the conflict of this resilient people with the Zionist entity dates back more than seven decades, during which this people has faced all kinds of massacres, displacements and destructions, perpetrated by the army and the settlers of the Israeli occupation..."
In fact, the PJD deputy believes that "to describe the events of October 7, 2023 as ’barbaric’ or ’savage’, as President Macron did, amounts to affirming his complicity with the Israeli occupation in the war it has been waging for more than a year in Gaza, and recently in Lebanon. Such a statement also amounts to supporting Israel’s war crimes, in violation of international law, and against "the UN resolutions, the International Court of Justice, the calls of people of conscience around the world who demand the cessation of this brutal and barbaric war against Gaza".
