Polisario Front Condemns France’s Support for Morocco’s Sahara Claim

The Polisario Front has condemned the remarks of Emmanuel Macron who declared on Tuesday before the Moroccan Parliament that France will defend Morocco’s "sovereignty" over the Sahara in international forums. The Sahrawi independence movement believes that Paris’ support will lead to "instability and an escalation of tensions" in the region.
The Polisario "condemns in the strongest terms the shameful position expressed" by Macron, said the Sahrawi "Ministry" of Information in a statement relayed by the SPS news agency, arguing that this position is contrary to the Charter of the United Nations and its resolutions concerning Western Sahara, as well as to "the responsibilities of the French State as a permanent member of the UN Security Council".
This support from France for Morocco in international forums such as the UN and the European Union would lead the regions of North and West Africa into instability and an escalation of tensions, lamented the Sahrawi "ministry". "With this position, Macron is only encouraging the Moroccan occupier to continue his dangerous adventure aimed at pursuing his expansion and modifying internationally recognized borders, by attacking his neighbors and seizing their lands," it reads.
"It is an imprudent and irresponsible policy. It will have serious consequences for international peace and security," the note adds, saying it hopes that this position of France will not lead the European Union to call into question the ruling of the Court of Justice (CJEU) which annulled the fisheries and trade agreements with Morocco on the grounds that they were concluded without the prior consent of the Sahrawi people.
