Luca Zidane nervous and angry reporters: the backstage of the Fennecs’ crash in Marrakech
The quarter-final between Algeria and Nigeria ended in total confusion in Marrakech. While the pitch delivered its verdict with a logical victory for the Super Eagles (2-0), the post-match was marked by strong tensions between the actors of the match and even within the media zone.
From the additional time, the electricity was palpable on the pitch of the Grand Stade. Frustrated by a match where they never managed to worry their opponents, the Algerian players let their anger burst out, like a particularly nervous Luca Zidane. The atmosphere became so toxic at the final whistle that the refereeing team had to be escorted by the security service to reach the locker rooms.
The agitation then moved to the stands of the stadium, even reaching the mixed zone where the journalists gather. About ten reporters were involved in heated verbal altercations, forcing the CAF security to intervene urgently. An unprecedented security cordon was deployed to try to stabilize the situation and protect the access, while the tensions persisted for long minutes before a precarious return to calm.
This brutal elimination of the Fennecs gives way to a clash at the top between Morocco and Nigeria. The Atlas Lions, qualified since Friday after their success against Cameroon, will face the confident Super Eagles in a semi-final that is already shaping up to be electric.
