Liverpool Fan Jailed for Racist Tweets Targeting Mohamed Salah

Monday 2 September 2019, by Sylvanus

Gary Hyland, a football supporter, was convicted by the Liverpool Magistrates’ Court for posting a series of racist messages on the Twitter account of Egyptian striker Mohamed Salah on August 6th.

A tasteless joke landed him in jail. It all started from an online discussion that a supporter had with Liverpool fans. Gary Hyland, 32, joked that the Egyptian striker prayed at Mecca at halftime and sent modified images of the entire team praying to Allah, reports alnas.fr.

In response to these allegations, another supporter asked him two questions: what is the problem with Muslims? Can you at least articulate it?

In response, Hyland sent a photo of Salah with an explosive vest accompanied by racist comments and other montages mocking people who pray to Allah, the same source specifies.

The Merseyside police, who were informed of these tweets, proceeded to arrest the Everton fan at his home.

He was sentenced to six weeks in prison with a 12-month suspended sentence by the Liverpool Magistrates’ Court. He will also be required to take a course on "human dignity" and perform 200 hours of unpaid community service.

Gary Hyland is accused of targeting the Muslim faith of the striker.
