LGBTQ+ Moroccan Refugees Face Persecution in Spanish Enclave of Ceuta

Many Moroccan homosexuals or bisexuals say they are victims of racism, violence and homophobia in Ceuta. Their tormentors would be Spaniards and local Moroccans who sometimes threaten them with death.

These homosexuals describe their situation in Ceuta as "worse than their total rejection as homosexuals in Morocco," reports Assabah. This is the case of a 31-year-old lesbian. In Tetouan, she had been the victim of the dissemination of a video that went viral on social networks. Threatened with death by members of her family, she had to exile herself to Ceuta where her situation is not the most flattering.

Faced with death threats and violence, homosexuals say they have organized a series of meetings with many political parties and associations defending the rights of the LGBT community. For its part, the local branch of the PSOE (Socialist Party), in power in Madrid, has called on the Ceuta authorities to strengthen the security and protection of Moroccan homosexuals who, according to it, must enjoy the same rights as their Spanish counterparts. Remains to be seen whether this call will be heard.
