Legendary Moroccan Andalusian Musician Massano Dies at 100

Better known by his stage name Massano, artist Mohamed Tazi Cherti passed away on Monday evening in Fez after a long illness. The centenarian was considered one of the pioneers of Andalusian music in Morocco.
The announcement of the artist’s death was made by the "Al Baât" Association of Andalusian Music in Fez. The deceased came from a family passionate about the art of "Samaâ" and "Tarab al ala". The late Mohamed Tazi Cherti was part of a long line of artists who had long valued Andalusian music.
He was from the generation of the late Ahmed Loukili and Abdelkrim Raïs and was a student of Mohammed El-Mtiri and Mohamed Al-Brihi.
Throughout his artistic career, he demonstrated impeccable professionalism. Mohamed Tazi Cherti was the conductor of the Mohammed El-Mtiri orchestra, a group with which he recorded many Mizanes of Andalusian music. He was also a virtuoso of the Rabâb instrument and taught at the "Dar Adiyel" music conservatory in Fez.
During his lifetime, he was honored in 1998 at the Fez Andalusian Music Festival, and in 2019, at the tenth meeting of Andalusian music enthusiasts in Tangier.
