Language Controversy Erupts at Moroccan Airport Over Amazigh Communication

Swissport, the company responsible for ground handling services at Al Aroui-Nador airport, is facing sharp criticism from the Nador section of the Moroccan Association for Human Rights due to the "refusal" of some of its employees "to communicate with travelers in the Amazigh language".
In the eyes of the association, this is "discriminatory behavior" and a "clear violation of citizens’ linguistic rights". In an open letter addressed to the airport director, it states that what happened constitutes an infringement on dignity and the right to communicate in an official language provided for by the Moroccan Constitution. The association reports that a number of Amazigh citizens were ignored or faced refusal of communication from Swissport employees, simply because they expressed themselves in Amazigh. It denounces a discriminatory practice contrary to international conventions and fundamental rights.

The association also denounced Swissport’s disregard for the Amazigh linguistic identity, which is nevertheless an official language of the State. It then demands concrete measures to be taken to correct the situation and ensure respect for linguistic diversity in public reception areas, particularly airports. Also, it calls for allowing the company’s employees to receive training in official languages to improve the quality of communication with travelers, especially in facilities considered as a welcoming showcase for citizens and tourists. It insists on the importance of ensuring an environment that guarantees travelers a feeling of comfort and respect.
Amazigh is not only a language of communication, but also a part of the identity and culture of the Moroccan people, the association concluded.
