Lamine Yamal the target of 60% of racist attacks against athletes in Spain, Brahim Diaz also affected
Football has become the main sounding board for racism and xenophobia in sport. This is the alarming conclusion of the first report of the Spanish Observatory of Racism and Xenophobia, which analyzes the spread of hate speech on social networks.
The Observatory used artificial intelligence to analyze the hateful messages targeting athletes, detecting 33,458 contents. The expressions found are extremely violent, including phrases such as "put* negr* muérete" (pu* of n***, die) or "mor* inmundo" (dirty moor).
The results of this analysis are damning and primarily target two players. The FC Barcelona striker, Lamine Yamal, is by far the most affected player, accounting for 60% of all the attacks and insults recorded.
He is followed by Real Madrid striker Vinicius Junior, who is the target of 29% of the hateful messages. To a lesser extent, other players such as Kylian Mbappé, Alejandro Balde, Brahim Díaz or Iñaki Williams are also targeted by these attacks.
The poor moderation of X (Twitter) pointed out
The report of the Spanish Observatory also highlights the difference in reaction between social media platforms in the face of these contents.
While Facebook is identified as one of the platforms that has best responded by removing 62% of the content reported to it, the X (formerly Twitter) network, owned by Elon Musk, has only done so to the tune of 10%.
