Lamine Yamal Is Learning to Cook His Favorite Moroccan Dish: Couscous
Moroccan couscous is one of Lamine Yamal’s favorite dishes. But the FC Barcelona star admits he still doesn’t know how to make it. To improve his cooking, the young footballer is now learning from a chef who comes to cook at his home.

With a ball, Lamine Yamal can do almost anything. But in front of a couscoussier, the Barça prodigy still has a lot to learn. “My favorite dish from Morocco is couscous. I think it’s the best there is,” he says. The problem: despite his love of this Moroccan specialty, the 19-year-old footballer admits he still doesn’t know how to make it.
The Spanish international revealed this new passion in the documentary « Revolució 304 », which focuses in particular on his career and family roots. His comments were reported on 16 octobre by the Spanish sports daily Estadio Deportivo.
He has found a way to learn: watching a professional at work. “I’m studying cooking. A chef comes to my house in the evening, prepares my meal and, while she’s doing that, I watch and learn, little by little,” he says. The young Barcelona player doesn’t just watch: he also helps with some of the preparations.
Moroccan couscous, a family affair
This passion didn’t come from nowhere. Born to a Moroccan father and a mother from Equatorial Guinea, Lamine Yamal grew up among several culinary traditions. His paternal grandmother Fatima had already spoken about how much he enjoyed the Moroccan dishes and desserts she made for him, especially during family visits.

Couscous isn’t his only ambition. He also wants to learn how to cook Equatorial Guinean rice with peanut sauce. Before his matches, his mother used to make him a version served with chicken to give him strength. “For now, I don’t know how to make them,” he admits, referring to his two favorite recipes.
Lamine Yamal acknowledges that learning takes patience. He draws on the techniques passed down by his mother and the chef’s advice. “It’s difficult, but I’m learning,” he says. In a previous interview with GQ Spain, he had already declared: “My home is the best restaurant in the world.”
