King Mohammed VI on a private visit to the United Arab Emirates
King Mohammed VI arrived in Abu Dhabi this Wednesday morning for a private visit to the United Arab Emirates. This trip comes in a particularly favorable diplomatic context for Morocco, just a few days after a historic vote at the UN Security Council on the Sahara.
The royal plane landed early Wednesday, after leaving Rabat-Salé the day before. This visit illustrates the close ties between the two nations, which have recently been highlighted by the Emirati position during the latest debates at the UN. The visit closely follows the adoption of Resolution 2797, which qualified the Moroccan autonomy plan as the true and only solution to the dispute.
Reaffirmed Emirati support at the UN
The United Arab Emirates has indeed reiterated its support for Morocco before the Fourth Committee of the General Assembly. The Emirati representative stated that his country "renews its full support for the brotherly Kingdom of Morocco in its sovereignty over the Moroccan Sahara". The diplomat stressed that the autonomy initiative was the only viable solution, "in accordance with international law" and "within the framework of the territorial integrity of the Kingdom".
This constant diplomatic support is a reflection of the personal relationship between King Mohammed VI and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who share common interests in regional security and development. The UAE has also welcomed Morocco’s New Development Model launched for the southern provinces, aimed at improving the living conditions of the inhabitants.
