King Mohammed VI to Attend Arab League Summit in Algeria, Easing Tensions

King Mohammed VI, accompanied by his son, Crown Prince Moulay Hassan, is expected to attend the Arab League summit to be held in Algiers on November 1 and 2. The presence of the Moroccan sovereign at this meeting would be a strong diplomatic gesture to ease tensions between the two countries.

Mohammed VI will attend this summit, confirmed official Algerian sources to Jeune Afrique. But for the moment, no official Moroccan source has confirmed or denied this information. The presence of the Moroccan monarch at this major meeting should help reduce tensions with Algeria, which broke off diplomatic relations with the kingdom in August 2021.

"The king’s presence is desired by Algiers and should help end the tensions. But Morocco must apologize to Algeria for the drone attacks and Pegasus spying," explains Algerian journalist and analyst Akram Kharief, to El Periódico de España. The last visit of Mohammed VI to Algeria dates back to March 2005, on the occasion of the 17th Arab League summit.

Algeria, an ally of the Polisario Front against Morocco in the conflict in the Sahara, also suspended in June its treaty of friendship, good neighborliness and cooperation with Spain, after Pedro Sanchez’s decision to support the Moroccan autonomy plan for the Sahara. Spain wants to maintain good relations with all its neighbors, reiterated on Tuesday Ángeles Moreno, the Secretary of State for Foreign and Global Affairs.
