Judge Reduces Sentence for Moroccan Drug Smuggler Who Swam to Ceuta with 40kg Cannabis

The Criminal Court of Ceuta sentenced a young Moroccan to 3 and a half years in prison with a fine of 202,778 euros, for drug trafficking and threat to public health. The sentence was reduced due to the risk taken by the defendant to make the crossing.
According to El Faro de Ceuta, the individual had been intercepted on July 19 while trying to reach the Spanish enclave by swimming. The young man was carrying a package containing 40 kilograms of cannabis resin.
In total, 72 hashish tablets had been seized from the suspect, adds the local media. At the time of the intervention, he had tried to get rid of the package by throwing it into the sea.
For the media, the judge was very lenient with the Moroccan, granting him mitigating circumstances. According to him, the defendant had to take the significant risk of making the "crossing out of necessity".
