Israeli Army Chief Visits Morocco, Meets Jewish Community in Historic Trip

On an official visit to Morocco this week, the Chief of the Israeli Defense Forces, Lieutenant General Aviv Kohavi, had several exchanges, as part of the strengthening of military cooperation between the two countries.
The highest-ranking officer of the Israeli army took advantage of this trip to pay tribute to the Moroccan Jewish community. In this sense, he went to Marrakech on Wednesday, where he met with members of the Jewish community of the city.
Kohavi made a stop at the Jewish cemetery and attended a prayer service at the Slat al-Azama synagogue. This is the first official visit by an Israeli Chief of Staff, the Israeli army statement said.
"The Kingdom of Morocco is an ally of the State of Israel, and our bond constitutes an example of a deep and special bond between two nations, based on a common heritage," he said on the occasion.
In addition, the senior Israeli official visited the Benguerir air base, where he met with the commander, Colonel Major Hassan Mahwar, with whom he discussed security issues. The possibilities of cooperation between the air forces of the two countries and the establishment of special training, were discussed.
