Israeli Agri-Food Giant Mehadrin Expands Avocado Production to Morocco

The Israeli group Mehadrin plans to settle in Morocco to grow avocados. In this regard, it announces that it has concluded a joint venture with a Moroccan producer.
This is the first time that Mehadrin will cultivate outside of Israel. There are several reasons behind this group specialized in real estate and agri-food to grow avocados in Morocco. According to Shaul Shelach, CEO of Mehadrin, the planting of avocados in the kingdom is part of a broader plan to be able to supply the group’s European customers more easily in terms of geography and costs.
"The strategy to grow avocados outside of Israel will be to have agricultural activities in Africa and certain areas of Latin America," he added, explaining that Morocco offers "the basic advantages necessary for avocado cultivation, namely the right type of land, water, weather and lower labor costs."
The avocado tree planting operation is scheduled to start in March 2022. It will then take two to three years to start the harvest and five years for all the avocado trees to reach full production, Shaul Shelach said.
