Invasive Moth from Morocco Threatens European Agriculture, EU Officials Warn

The European Commission has just confirmed the discovery of a shipment of grenades from Morocco infested with the False Codling Moth, a pest previously unknown in this region considered free of this threat.

The Valencian Association of Farmers (AVA-ASAJA) in Spain has expressed concern about this threat, highlighting the potential danger to European agriculture. The organization has called for an immediate EU investigation to assess the extent of the threat and consider measures to prevent the spread of this pest in Europe. The False Codling Moth, a type of butterfly, is known to cause considerable damage to many crops and tree species, thus threatening agricultural production.

The butterfly, formidable for various productions such as citrus fruits, stone fruits, and even vines, could lead to a significant reduction in agricultural production if it spreads in Europe. Its impact is not negligible: an estimated 25% reduction in citrus production. The magnitude of the threat is illustrated by its presence and rapid expansion in Africa, where it has already affected several countries. The president of AVA-ASAJA, Cristóbal Aguado, has warned about the pest’s ability to spread rapidly, citing the high risk for the many imports of fruits and vegetables from Morocco to the EU.
