Intertek to Oversee World’s Longest Submarine Cable Project Linking Morocco and UK

Xlinks, the company that will build the submarine cable that is to connect southern Morocco to the United Kingdom, has appointed Intertek, a specialist in long-term interconnection projects, to provide it with quality assurance and technical advice.
Specifically, Intertek will ensure the routing of the submarine cables, the survey specifications and the supply on what will be the world’s longest submarine cable between the United Kingdom and Morocco. This follows the completion of a maritime permit feasibility study in 2021.
This project aims to contribute to the UK’s net zero emissions challenge by 2050 and provide more consistent electricity production from enhanced solar and wind resources in Morocco.
Technically, the project plans four submarine cables, each about 3,800 km long, in twin cable systems of 1.8 gigawatts (GW) that will exclusively connect major solar and wind farms in Morocco to the UK electricity grid. The two 1.8 GW systems will be located between the UK and the 10.5 GW Moroccan renewable energy farms in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region.
