Insults are our language": a Moroccan sentenced to 20 months in prison in Narbonne

Separated since 2024, the couple maintained a toxic relationship marked by the defendant’s crack and alcohol consumption, who had become homeless. Last January, the man flooded the mother of his three children with 31 messages of extreme violence, before an altercation broke out in front of the school, where the victim reported being slapped and spat on, according to L’Indépendant.

During the hearing presided over by Clémence Caron, the defendant, considered difficult to manage, had to be expelled to allow the continuation of the debates. While he admitted the insulting nature of his messages, stating that "insults... Yes, that’s our language", he firmly denied the blows inflicted in front of his children, arguing a constant provocation from his ex-partner.

The lawyer for the civil party, Maître Bérengère Lécéa, recalled that her client had already filed a complaint in the past without success. The prosecutor, Jade Berteaud, denounced a man "vomiting his hatred" and ordered psychological assessments on the children aged 3 to 11, underlining the traumatic climate of the scene of violence in front of the school.

The Narbonne court finally handed down a sentence of thirty months in prison, ten of which were suspended, accompanied by a detention order. In addition to the obligation of care and the ban on contact with the victim, the convicted person will have to pay 1,300 euros in damages to his ex-partner for the moral harm suffered.
