EU Imports of Moroccan Fruits and Vegetables Surge, Spain Leads Demand

The European Union remains the leading import market for Moroccan fruits and vegetables, with a total of nearly 860,000 tons of market garden products.
According to L’Economiste, "Spain remains the main buyer, particularly of tomatoes, and more specifically, of high value-added products, such as tomatoes, cherries and grapes. In 2019, nearly 267,360 tons of Moroccan vegetables were imported, an increase of 10%. The same is true for fruit imports, which increased by 4% to 162,939 tons.
As for the European Union’s imports of fruits and vegetables from Morocco, they increased by 4% in 2019 compared to 2018, totaling 1.4 million tons.
As for market garden products, they amounted to 859,095 tons in 2019, including 481,706 tons of tomatoes (+7%). In addition, "imports of Moroccan vegetables into the EU increased by 26%, while those of fruits increased by 53.6%" over a longer period.
It should be noted that the volume of food exports reached, for the first time, nearly 3.1 million tons, making the sector the second largest foreign exchange earner for the country. This performance makes the sector the second largest foreign exchange earner for the country. "Moreover, the food trade balance has been in surplus for the second consecutive year."
