IMF to Support Morocco’s Inclusive Economic Recovery with Social Focus

The social aspect will be at the heart of economic policies in the MENA region, including Morocco. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is fully in favor of this orientation and integrates it among its regional priorities for this new direction.
Having set up a strategic project aimed at promoting the social aspect for an integrated and inclusive recovery, Morocco will be among the first countries to benefit from the expertise of the international financial institution. Thus, "the IMF is forging a promising partnership with Morocco that has resulted in structural reforms over the past 10 years that have contributed to improving the country’s economic situation and the stability of macroeconomic aggregates," said Jihad Azour, Director of the Middle East and Central Asia Department of the IMF, during the virtual workshop.
Moreover, the health crisis has caused social and territorial imbalances that Morocco has faced by setting up an ambitious project. Thus, in his speech delivered at the opening of the fall parliamentary session, King Mohammed VI laid the foundations for an ambitious economic recovery plan, around a major universal social coverage project, through four axes, including the expansion by 2022, of medical coverage, to allow 22 million additional beneficiaries to enjoy basic health insurance.
Then, family allowances will be generalized in favor of 3 million families, thus benefiting about 7 million school-age children. The base of members of the pension system will be expanded to nearly 5 million Moroccans. In addition, access to unemployment benefits will be generalized for Moroccans with regular employment.
