IMF Praises Morocco’s COVID-19 Vaccination Progress, Pledges Ongoing Support

The IMF said it was satisfied with Morocco’s progress in Covid vaccination. Its director made this known this week during a meeting with the Minister of Economy.
A meeting was held on Friday, April 16, 2021 between Mohamed Benchaaboun, Minister of Economy, Finance and Administrative Reform, Abdellatif Jouahri, Governor of Bank Al-Maghrib and Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the IMF. During this virtual meeting, Kristalina Georgieva reaffirmed the commitment of her institution and the international financial community to continue their support to developing countries in their endurance for an effective and sustainable recovery. The IMF Director, satisfied with the efforts of the kingdom, also urged the leaders to continue in the same momentum in order to take advantage of new opportunities, especially in the climate and digital fields.
For his part, Mohamed Benchaaboun took stock of the main measures taken by Morocco in the fight against this pandemic and the priority reform projects put in place, in accordance with the High Directives of King Mohammed VI, especially the post-Covid recovery plan, the reform of the public sector and the program to generalize social protection, said the Ministry of Economy in a press release. Benchaaboun also welcomed the IMF’s management for its initiatives to curb the impacts of the crisis.
In the same vein, the Governor of the Central Bank, Abdellatif Jouahri, also welcomed the efforts of the IMF during this crisis and for its technical and financial support to the kingdom through the PLL and others. He also presented the country’s commitments and efforts in priority areas, mainly green finance, public-private partnerships. At the end of this meeting held outside the World Bank and IMF Spring Meetings held virtually from April 9 to 11, 2021, the two parties reaffirmed their common will to strengthen the partnership between Morocco and the IMF. They also committed to work for the good organization of the Annual Meetings of the World Bank and the IMF, which will be held in Marrakech in October 2022, the statement concluded.
