Iconic Club Med Agadir Resort Closes After 55 Years, Citing Pandemic Impact

Initially announced for the first quarter of 2022, the highly renowned Agadir hotel complex, Club Med, which has been operating in Agadir since 1965 and was very famous until the early 2000s, has just announced its bankruptcy earlier than expected. The Covid-19 pandemic and its implications for the tourism chain are the main cause of this sudden closure of this mythical hotel with a capacity of 374 rooms, or 782 beds.
This closure is undoubtedly a blow to tourism in Agadir, where the hotel park is experiencing a real downward spiral due to the Covid-19 crisis. The Agadir hotel is considered the first permanent concrete establishment of Club Med on the African continent, after the reconstruction of the city following the 1960 earthquake. Previously, the group already had a first establishment in Al Hoceima in 1963.
According to the Top Management of this French hotel brand, the decision to close was taken in agreement with the Moroccan partners, Madaëf, the tourism branch of the CDG group. It explains that these are the consequences of the health crisis, particularly the closure of the borders of European countries, the main source markets. In addition to the health crisis, the managers point out that the Club Med in Agadir, completely renovated in 1999 and remained famous until the early 2000s, no longer meets the taste of the clientele.
However, Club Med intends to remain in Morocco and plans to open a new premium establishment in Essaouira in 2
