Human Rights Group Demands Investigation into Moroccan Teen’s Death at Spanish Youth Hostel

Nearly 6 months after the death of the young Moroccan who died by asphyxiation in Spain, the Moroccan League for the Defense of Human Rights (LMDDH) has stepped up. It has called on the Spanish justice system to open an investigation into the circumstances of the death of Ilyas Tahiri in a youth hostel in the city of Almeria in southern Spain.
The Moroccan League for the Defense of Human Rights (LMDDH) is determined to make itself heard. In a letter addressed to the Spanish ambassador in Rabat, the LMDDH recalled the circumstances in which the young Moroccan died, reports Hespress. With the video as evidence, the league argues that the hostel supervisors in Almería transported the young Moroccan with his hands tied to a room. Once installed on the bed, they martyred his back and neck for several minutes with their knees. This caused his death by suffocation.
Continuing its explanations, the outraged LMDDH denounced the "complicity" of various parties, including the judiciary, the forensic services and the hostel.
According to the same source, this case of voluntary manslaughter was dismissed by the Spanish justice system. It concluded that the young victim’s death was "an accident". Worse, the forensic report simply suggested a death from cardiac arrest, ruling out death by suffocation, contradicting the reality of the facts as demonstrated by the video.
The league also invited the Spanish ambassador to transmit to the Spanish judicial authorities its objections to "the alteration of the facts" and "the non-respect of the principle of equality before the law as stipulated by international conventions". It also called for an investigation into the circumstances of the young Moroccan’s death and for the prosecution of all those involved in this case.
